Jackalackackie Free Hat Pattern For You... Surprise!

Baby, it's cold outside. I made this one for myself. I didn't have one single hat that I could wear out of the house and not sprint for the car due to the ugliness.

I'm calling this pattern easy. Once you get the scallop stitch (that's what I'm calling it. I don't know the real name. If anyone knows, please help me out.), it's cake.

Materials needed:

Size F crochet hook
1 skein Paton's Classic Wool worsted weight (Moss Heather) - 210 yds
1 skein Knit Picks Stroll fingering weight (Aloha Multi) - 231 yds
Gauge: 5 sc and 3 rows in 1 inch

*Ahem* holding both strands of yarn together...

- ch 46

- sc 2nd st from hook, sc next 44 sts, ch 1, tn - 45 sc

- sc each st across, ch 1, tn - 45 sc

- repeat last row 3 more times - 45 sc

- [BL] 25 sc, skip next st, [(sc, ch 2, dc) next st, skip next st], repeat 8 times, hdc last st, ch 1, tn - 25 [BL] sc, 9 scallops, 1 hdc

scallop st
[bl] back loop st

- *** sc 1st st, [(sc, ch 2, dc) in ch 1 space of scallop], repeat 8 times, [BL] 25 sc, ch 1, tn - 1 sc, 9 scallops, 25 [BL] sc

ch 1 space of scallop
- [BL] 25 sc, [(sc, ch 2, dc) in ch 1 space of scallop], repeat 8 times, hdc last st, ch 1, tn - 25 [BL] sc, 9 scallops, 1 hdc ***

- repeat from *** to *** 21 more times

- sc 1st st, 2 sc in each ch 1 space of scallop, 3sc in ch 1 space of last scallop, sc next 25 sts, ch 1, tn - 45 sc

- sc each st across, ch 1, tn - 45 sc

- repeat last row 3 more times - 45 sc (FO sock yarn on last row of repeat)

- (working with just worsted yarn) fold hat in half, 45 sc through both sts of each side joining the 2 sides tog., ch 1, tn - 45 sc

sc through both sts on each side of hat joining them

- sl st each st across (loosely) - 45 sl st

- turn hat right side out

what you should have after turning the hat right side out... don't forget your yarn!

- sc 56 evenly across top of hat - 56 sc

sts along the top of the hat
sts along the top of the hat
(Special Stitch - (d.sc) - insert hook through st, yo, pull through st, insert hook through next st, yo over, pull through sts (repeat for as many sts as pattern calls for), yo, pull yarn through all loops on the hook)

- (d.sc next 4 sts tog.), repeat 13 more times - 14 sc

- sc each st around - 14 sc

- (d.sc next 2 sts tog.), repeat 6 more times - 7 sc

- (d.sc next 2 sts tog.), repeat 2 more times, sl st 3rd st of row, FO - 3 sc, 1 sl st

You really should block this (I didn't block mine)... do what makes you happy.

Abbreviations:

ch - chain
sc - single crochet
st(s) - stitch(es)
sl st - slip stitch
FO - fasten off
[BL] - back loop

  1. Now that I'm learning to crochet, I am excited when I see cute hats like this. Ok, must move past single crochet and start getting busy on the various techniques.

    1. All you need is slip stitch, single crochet, half double crochet, and double crochet for this one. Awesome that you're learning crochet!

  2. That is awesome! I don't live in a place cold enough to wear hats, but if I did, I'd make this hat. I wanna learn the stitch, though, and maybe put it into other things, like house-shoe-boot cuffs.

    1. It's such a pretty stitch. If you're doing it on square-ish items, make your stitch count odd & add a sc to the beginning.
